Ludvig Frid was born in well to do family in southern Sweden. In 1873-81, he studied art at the Academy in Stockholm. He received a Royal Medal and a travel grant from King Oskar II, so he could travel to Paris to study there. The king even bought his painting during the exhibition in Stockholm in 1885. Frid's artwork presents primarily religious motives in the form of altar pieces found in churches in Sweden.
